GRE & Grad School Prep

In the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, I have been trying to find ways to keep myself mentally active. I have wanted to continue my education for about a year now and I feel like I have no excuse not to do the research into schools and study for the GRE exam. I have learned so much about my interests in the past few months. With that said, I still find it difficult to keep myself engaged and accountable.

I have found myself getting distracted with house projects, or laying in bed later through the morning, or even buying and building a website instead of doing any prep. I have been blessed to have a planner from my good friend (and the queen of organization), Paige Hoel. This planner has helped me to keep everything straight and I have never felt more organized! However it doesn’t substitute for my lack of self-discipline. I need to find a way to be more diligent with my time when I am completely lacking a sense of routine.

I am very blessed to be in a situation where I still have a job and am able to charge my time to closure with my company, even when I don’t have work to do. There are so many who aren’t fortunate enough to say the same (currently 23.1 million Americans or 14.7% of our population have lost their jobs). With that said, without a routine, I lose my sense of urgency with my time. I feel myself slipping into a bad habit of “I can do it later”, because I have the whole day with nothing planned out. I need to be more stringent with scheduling out study hours and actually sticking to them. My house is full of distractions and it’s so easy to get carried away and lose a whole day. I hope I can hold a higher standard for myself because I know it will be so beneficial for my future. I want to take advantage of this opportunity I have been given!

I know I would like to go back to school for climate or environmental science. My primary driver for a career is that feeling of fulfillment in my work – currently I am unfortunately lacking a sense of altruism in my job. I want to feel the difference between a job and a career. The climate crisis is such an anxiety-provoking subject for me. Due to these factors, I know I will have passion and drive if I go into a climate/environmental science career. Ameliorating our current climate situation would be a primary goal. Specifically, I have been interested in three fields, mycology, soil carbon sequestration and paleoclimatology.

Mycology is the study of fungi. Since learning about mycelium in college Biology, I have found it fascinating. Mycelium has a positive feedback loop with roots of plants and trees where they each discard what the other needs. Check out this podcast by Radiolab to learn just how cool and interconnected nature is – it’s guaranteed to knock your socks off! I would love to learn more about these interactions and how their functions play a role in the carbon cycle.

Soil Carbon Sequestration is something that I have come across recently. Primarily this is carried out through Carbon Farming. It is apparent that carbon sequestration is reliant on Soil Organic Carbon or SOC (see this paper published in Nature). I would love to expand my knowledge about sequestration as that has the potential to directly reduce the effects of climate change.

I am also interested in paleoclimatology. When I recently found out what it actually is, I was shocked. How scientists can determine the climate and weather in the past due to old samples of ice/earth/trees/shells/air bubbles/pollen/etc. is currently beyond me. I find this fascinating and would love to learn more. I have a difficult time thinking about how I could go back to school for this though since this has been studied for several decades now. I plan on researching various papers and studies in order to find holes or areas for improvement in the field.

Something I have found very rewarding for myself is actually setting and writing down goals. In the planner I have, there is a section laid out where I can do this. Setting month by month goals in both my personal and professional life has been something I hope to continue! Heck, last month I just had a goal to finish a book, making my personal book count 4 now (check out me actually reading <– ). I have started small in order to find a baseline for what I can achieve but hope to get more big picture and create more long term plan for myself in the future. Getting myself in the planning mindset is also helping me mentally prepare to go back to school.

Thanks for visiting my first blog post ever! I will always try to incorporate some good into each of my posts and will always give some advice as well as inquire for any advice from the humans (or not humans) of the interweb! I hope to not let these get too stream-of-conscious but sometimes I may get carried away ;). Please feel free to leave any advice/thoughts/comments in the replies below! If you would like to subscribe, visit the bottom right corner of my page.

Lastly, check out these wonderful pancakes I’ve been making using Paleo batter – they are a little weekend treat I do for myself (partly to help me keep track of the days). My personal recipe can be found here!
